Forensic Nurse Examiner ( Contractual ) – Mount Clemens, MI
Organization Overview: Turning Point, Inc in Mount Clemens, MI is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization qualified employer for Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF). Turning Point, Inc empowers domestic and sexual violence survivors through comprehensive services and resources while advocating for community action to end oppression and violence. We offer emergency shelter, housing, trauma advocacy services, forensic nurse examiner program & first response advocacy services, 24-hour hotline, personal protection order and legal advocacy services, and community outreach.
Position Overview:
The Forensic Nurse Examiner (FNE) is part of a team of nurses that provides 24/7 trauma-informed emergency medical care and evidence collection for individuals who experience sexual assault or intimate partner violence, including strangulation. Under the supervision of the Administrator of Clinical Forensic Nursing Services (ACFNS), the FNE follows established clinical guidelines and protocols in providing medical forensic examinations, crisis intervention, testimonies, resources, and support to patients and their significant others. The FNE also assists the ACFNS in the sustainability and advancement of Turning Point’s Forensic Nurse Examiner Program (FNEP) through the recruitment, training, and monitoring of staff members. Travel is required between FNEP sites.
General Task Areas:
• Implement agency and program mission and empowerment philosophy.
• Maintain agency policy on confidentiality, record keeping and professional ethics.
• Maintains policies, procedures, protocols and on-call schedules for the FNE Program.
• Perform medical forensic examinations of sexual assault patients and suspects.
• Coordinates case management and follow up appointments with patients.
• Dispense prophylactic medications under the direction of a Program Medical Director(s) per standing orders.
• Communicates with advocates to ensure crisis intervention and follow-up for sexual assault survivors.
• Provide fact/expert witness testimony when necessary.
• Communicates with potential patients through hotline calls (answering medical questions, providing resources, providing crisis intervention, etc.).
• Participates in the quality assurance of medical charts.
• Collects statistical data and provides reports
• Assists in the recruitment and train Forensic Nurse Examiners and monitor their progress.
• Participates in staff meetings/trainings.
• Participates in FNE education credits that are imperative for nursing licensure and forensic nursing credits.
• Participates in peer review for team members and other professionals in the tri-county area.
• Assists in maintaining the facility and equipment usage.
• Supports 24/7 accountability of FNEP. Provides a minimum of 48 hours per month of on-call coverage for the program.
• Promote the FNEP publicly.
• May participate in the planning, organization, and advancement of TP FNEP.
• Abide by agency policies, procedures, contracts, rules and regulations.

• Perform duties as assigned by the ACFNS.
Qualifications:
• Current, active, unencumbered RN license in the State of Michigan.
• Current IAFN Member preferred.
• Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree or equivalent. Graduate degree preferred.
• Current Basic Life Support training BLS
• Five years prior nursing experience preferred.
• Prior experience with sexual assault patients preferred.
• Demonstrated competence in physical assessment, including anogenital assessment, and specialty examination techniques utilized for medical forensic exams.
• Excellent written, interpersonal and oral communications skills.
• Ability to provide trauma informed care.
• Ability to communicate with individuals from diverse cultures and backgrounds.
• Ability to utilize computer for day to day tasks. (Microsoft Office 365)
• Ability to utilize office equipment (Copier, Scanner, Fax, etc.)
• Completion of Adult/Adolescent SANE basic training in accordance with IAFN guidelines required.
• Completion of Pediatric SANE basic training in accordance with IAFN guidelines, preferred.
• Current SANE-A Certification from the IAFN, preferred. Agreement to obtain certification, within one year of hire, if not already certified.
• Current SANE-P Certification from the IAFN preferred.
• Verification of a completed TB Skin Test required.
Other Conditions and Qualifications:
• Awareness of possible occupational exposure to blood and body fluids.
• Ability to lift materials weighing up to 20 pounds.
• Independently mobile. Tasks performed while sitting, standing and walking.
• Must have access to reliable transportation in order to meet the needs of the organization.
• Requires access to medical and personal information of a delicate nature, and realizes the potentially serious results of improper disclosure.
